In crypto years, the July 25th report by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the DAO ICO probably feels like ancient history to many industry observers. Much has been written about it and the flavor of a lot of that comment has been that the gold rush is over.
For many, that interpretation was reinforced soon after the SEC’s report by the Chinese government’s decision to ban ICOs altogether – and give them the nasty name of “illegal financial crimes” to boot. Even Gibraltar got on the bandwagon – with its Financial Services Commission announcing on September 22nd that it was “considering” a regulatory framework “covering the promotion and sale of tokens.”

Ethereum (ETH) now has a US$29billion market capitalization, second only to Bitcoin’s US$69 billion. ETH is also the second highest trading digital cryptocurrency or asset by volume, below Bitcoin and above Ripple.
ETH has had a wild ride this month, dropping from all-time highs around US$400 to US$200. The cryptocurrency has since rallied and currently trades around US$300.
Litecoin is currently the sixth largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of US$2.6b. The asset was recently selling for a record high price of ~US$90, before dipping to ~US$45, and has still given investors a 10x return over the past 6 months.
I think it’s amazing that you can design algorithms that might have society-level impact. AI algorithms are in that category. And, AI is fun. Take Genetic Programming, where you write computer programs to evolve other computer programs. Moreover, AI poses exciting engineering challenges like scaling, and it asks the biggest questions, like the nature of the mind.
For these reasons, AI was my first love. I started my AI reading and hacking intently in the early 90s. By 1997, I was far enough along hacking AI that people started paying me to do it. I never looked back, doing two companies and a PhD on AI.

If you crave action and volatility, this is the asset for you. But traditional capital markets professionals know very little about cryptocurrencies; more education is warranted.
Due to a recent update on a long-delayed upgrade to the underlying code of the internet, the world wide web is on the verge of adding a native payments system. The new specifications detail a suite of tools that allow merchants to accept many payment types, including Bitcoin, much more easily.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has been working on a currency-agnostic web payment standard for more than two years. On September 4th, China announced an outright ban of all ICOs, suggested refunding any collected funds in any ongoing crowd sales, and hinted at the shuttering of exchanges trading ICOs.
